Does Celebrity Endorsement Mean More Sales?
The beauty of being a coveted celebrity is that everyone wants to be you, which means they want to wear what you are wearing, want the same beauty products anything that will make them that much more….well beautiful. So with this ethos, it’s no wonder that since its inception in 2005, twitter has created a whole new stratosphere of what celebrities are ‘diggin’
Kh
loe Kardashian of the famous Kardashian family is one such lucky celeb that is rumoured to be paid $8,000 per endorsed tweet! Her infamous tweet ‘Want to know how Old Navy makes your butt look scary good? Ask a Kardashian,’ Kardashian with over 5 million followers would be the ideal target for the figure hugging jeans. A coincidence? Well no. As with anything a trend comes the hired help. New agencies are popping up to ‘match’ celebrities to products and companies to best get the message out there.
Now before you start following celebrities to get a look at what they are diggin’ this week. It is in no means a perfect medium to switch on. The drawbacks of the 140 character status update site is that the tweets are short lived and in the fast paced western world the need for more means these tweets could get over looked without even being seriously considered.
There are risks inferred with this type of celebrity endorsements. The celebrity chosen has to have an image that doesn’t damage the product or paying brand in any way. As twitter news is updated so regularly on celebrity goings on it can be difficult to stop a storm. It also is near impossible to measure the tweets effectiveness as there s no way to see if their followers are compelled to spend. That’s what its all about really. Spending.
Having thoughtfully considered the cons now think of the pros! A celebrity-endorsed tweet may cost money, but it is far less expensive then a television advert or even to pay said celebrity to actively endorse your brand on a daily basis. Although wouldn’t that be nice? It is also an easy way to capture an audience, an audience who actually want to hear what the celebrities are doing with their day.
So now you are aware of what new methods the marketers are using, why not click on the links and spend spend spend!

Interesting article Lauren. It makes me wonder if Tulisa Contostavlos’ tweeting about little mix could be a large part of the girls success?
Also what counts as a celebrities these days? For some it’s simply a fact of appearing on TV but when it comes to the social web many of the stars haven’t come close to a TV studio yet their popularity on sites such as youtube and twitter out strips shows and TV celebs.
This is true, but this could be because of advances in social media where the T.V. doesn’t make a star no more. The internet gives an international portal to these ‘celebs’, Look at a few years ago when Lily Allen shot to fame through Myspace. Its an ever changing platform and many can’t seem to keep up. Keeping up with who is and what makes a celeb is the same. We will get left behind! Haha!

So would you suggest companies invest in getting popular/active social media users to advertise their products?
I think that if companies choose this route then choose it wisely. People are waking up to these methods that marketers are using today, they aren’t stupid and more than likely can spot a ‘paid for’ post a mile away. This could be detromental to the brand.
